This year I am tackling a completely new subject for me; film making.

This term I will be learning all about how to film interview in preparation to create my own documentary later on in the year. In this blog post I explore the basics of Primmer Pro, an Adobe Software used to edit videos. The task we where set out to do today was to film and edit a quick interview. We started this workshop by watching a few show interviews to get an idea of what techniques can be used when filming, I took notes so I could refer to these when filming. Above I have attached my notes, when watching the documentaries I learnt that more than one camera can be used when filming a sit down interview. This helps add a different perspective to the person in the hot seat and in doing so you are able to reveal a different side to the person, or more emotion. After a short class researching and a quick lesson on the equipment we would be using, we went into the film studio. This wasn't a space I had ever worked in before, so I was careful to take in the health and safety procedures I would need to follow. This main hazard that I had not come into contact with before is a boom, this is used to capture sound when filming at a high quality. Because of its length and how it hangs above the interviewee, it can be in the way and has the risk of hitting people. Bellow is a link to my health and safety book, this includes a risk assessment for the studio. EQUIPTMENTIn the studio we used two cameras, this meant that each one needed its only SD card, adding a higher level of technicality when editing in Premier Pro, as we had two angles to choose from. My task within the group was to oversee one of the cameras, I had to ensure the shot was focussed and correctly positioned, taking into account the lighting. Additionally, I had to ensure that the film button was pressed at the same time as the other camera and audio, this helped when editing the footage because they where nearly synced. As our class had little experience with filming we had the necessary support from the tutors, meaning I learnt lots along the way. One member of the group sat on the sofa and answered the questions we had created, we also had an interviewer asking them off camera. We based our question on lockdown as we needed quick and sharp answers. After filming the interview we had three different memory cards, two camera angles and one audio file. We put these onto the computer and opened Premier Pro. Personally, I have had no previous experience on this software, so me and my editing partner took it slow and went through the different features it had to offer. The first step was to sync the audio/ sound with the image, this was the most important part as un-synced audio is not very visually pleasing. Next, we went through the interview choosing when to switch between the different camera angles. We based our decision off of what the person in the holy seat was talking about. If he showed more emotion or the topic became more dramatic, we went into the closer angle to emphasise it.
Finally, we explored the basics of colour correction and started adjust the colours in the clips to make the interview feel more vibrant. Final InterviewAbove I have attached the final edited interview. I am really happy with the progress I was able to make today and I feel I am a lot more confident in the filming studio. Additionally, I now know the basics off Premier Pro and feel I can use what I learnt today and expand on it to be able to edit to a professional standard. Moving on I want to try and experiment with sound and music in post production, I feel this will add another depth on to the work. R E F R E N C E S[i] University, L.S.B. (n.d.). Film Studio.
