GLOSSARY OF TERMS- F I L M E D I T I N G T E C H N I Q U E S - To support me through the year, I have created a glossary of terms, these are phrases used when referring to the editing process and will be particularly useful for my written assignment. A - Z : C O N T I N U I T Y E D I T I N G
Traditionally used in commercial cinema, continuity editing is used to establish logical coherence between shots. Often a scene in a film is shot several different times, from different angles, to capture different sounds or action. When using the continuity technique it is the editors job to stitch these different shots together and make it appear seamless and into a continuous piece. [i] C R O S S C U T T I N G
In terms of film, cross cutting is a certain editing technique that is used to cut different or separate actions together and make it appear to the viewer that they happened simultaneously. [ii] C U T
In film a cut is an abrupt transition from one sequence to another. It is usually used to add drama or suspense in cinematography. [iii] E S T A B L I S H I N G S H O T
An establishing shot is one that is used to set up the context for the scene or scenes ahead. It is designed to reveal to the audience where any action will be taking place, relationships between characters or objects and the geography of the scene. Usually, this is a wide shot that is tactically placed at the beginning of the piece of film. [iv] fade
In editing the term fade is used to describe a transition between a scene, where the screen would then turn to a solid colour, for example black. A fade to black is usually used for dramatic purposes and is traditionally used at the end of a film, that could be left on a cliff hanger or a dramatic plot twist. A fade in, maybe to white, would indicate a dreamy atmosphere. [v] jump cut
A jump cut is used to create drama or amplify tension, usually in the horror genre. It is a single shot that is suddenly cut to make the subject suddenly jump forward in time. [vi] Matched cut
A matched cut slightly differs from a jump cut. It is a transition that takes parts from the previous scene and brings them forward into the text, fluidly rather than jumpy. [vii] montage
Montage can be translated to 'assembly' or 'editing' in French. It basically is a technique used that combines a sequence of clips together to a piece of sound. [viii] sequence shot
A sequence shot, sometimes referred to as a long take, is when the shot is running for a long time it creates tension and visual rhythm. [ix] wipe
A wipe is a transitional shot where a moving shape replaces one shot with the second shot.
